The PMP Certificate is a industry leading Project Management Certificate Issued by the Project Management Industry (PMI) that certifiies that a Project Manager has the required, technical , leadership and business awareness skills to execute and manage a project. The Project Management Professional Certificate is obtained by passing the PMI PMP Exam and meeting the PMP Certification Requirements

PMP Certification Requirements

To qualify to write the PMP exam, Project Managers must have :

  • A four-year degree
  • 36 months leading projects
  • 35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM® Certification

— OR —

  • A high school diploma or an associate’s degree (or global equivalent)
  • 60 months leading projects
  • 35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM® Certification

How to Apply for the PMP Exam

Before applying for your PMP Exam, make sure you gather your information including your experience andn roles in Projects you have worked on and your roles and responsibilities as well as the time worked in these projects. The more extensive your resources are the better. 

Gather all your Certficates and qualifications from respective institutions indicating the courses you have complete with your respective qualifying hours. 

 

Apply for the exam

Next make sure you register for a PMI account and then apply for the exam. To apply for the exam ti wil cost you $405 as a member and $555 as a non member. Once you have been accepted you can book a time at a testing site near you  (or you can take it online). Learn more about preparing for the exam.

 

How long is the PMP Certificate Valid for?

The PMI PMP Certificate is valid for 3 years after completing your PMP Certification. To maintain the Certficate, Project Managers must earn 60 professional deverlopement units (PDU's) in a 3 year cycle. Professional Development Units (PDUs) are obtain by volunteering, learning or teaching others, usually for one hour blocks of time. You are required to track and claim these PDUs over your certification cycle. PDUS are divided in two categories, Education and Giving Back to the Profession. 

  • PDUS can be earn by attending a professional seminar or webinar. 
  • Giving Back PDUs are for time spent volunteering, mentoring, working with professional groups, and more.

Joining a community like MPUG provides holders of existing PMP Certificates, the platform to earn Webinar PDU's by viewing MPUG's on Demand Webinars. MPUG allows users to easily track their PMU's and easily claim them. 

Project Managers can also give back to the community by assisting in online forums or writing quality content for MPUG. 

How to Train for the PMP Certficate 

To train for the PMI PMP Certificate PMI recommends using one of their Authorised Training Providers. MPUG is one of PMI's accredited institutions to provide PMP Certification training focussing on the PMP Talent Triangle. MPUG is the official Microsoft Project User Group.
